Homesteading is not a new idea. In 1862, President Abraham Lincoln signed the Homestead Act into law. This meant that citizens who applied for a homestead received up to 160 acres of land in exchange for the agreement to live on it, improve the land, and pay a small fee. Over 150 years later, the law is no longer in effect, but there are many who are still striving to have their own homestead and improve their land.
Homesteading can look different from one person to the next. You can homestead on 1/4 of an acre, or on 500 acres. You can have simply one small garden, or you can have a large garden, chickens, pigs, cows, and all the things. That’s the beautiful thing about homesteading.
My name is Kim Jones, and I am homesteading on one acre with my husband and children. We have a garden, chickens, and rabbits. I love Jesus, my family, learning about regenerative agriculture, and starting but not finishing all kinds of things.
My hope for Not Your Mother’s Homestead is that I can share my homesteading journey, encourage you along the way, and show you what not to do! If I can do it, so can you!
Happy Homesteading!
